The Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy and Spanish Navy Ship, BAM FUROR have conducted a joint maritime security exercise to improve operational effectiveness within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Adm. Abdullahi Mustapha, revealed this in a statement on Sunday.

Mustapha however said that the exercise code named “EXERCISE COASTAL GRIP” held on Saturday.

According to him, the exercise aligns with the strategic vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, which focuses on building a capable, responsive and mission-oriented Navy.

“The Exercise is aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and strengthening the professional competence of personnel of the Western Naval Command.”

The FOC disclosed that the operational areas covered by the exercise include fishery protection, Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations.

“It also covers the suppression of illicit activities such as drug trafficking within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

“The primary objective was to enhance interoperability between the Nigerian and Spanish navies,” he said.

Mustapha added that the exercise provided an opportunity to extract vital operational and tactical data necessary for reviewing and improving existing tactics, techniques, and procedures.

“The successful conduct of the exercise highlights Nigerian Navy’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment, while also strengthening collaboration and fostering enduring partnerships with allied navies,” he emphasised.(NAN)
