Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Efficient Tax System, Says Old Tax Law Made Nigerians Poor

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven tax system to foster economic growth.

Tinubu gave the assurance while inaugurating the new headquarters of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in Abuja .

The state-of-the-art facility was described by the president as a milestone in Nigeria’s economic reform journey.

The complex comprising  three towers with 16 floors is designed to accommodate about 3,000 employees, providing a centralised revenue operational hub.

Tinubu said the inauguration symbolised efforts to strengthen institutions and rebuild public confidence in governance and revenue administration.

“Our direction is clear: a revenue system that rewards enterprise, supports growth, and ensures that every contribution to the national cause is matched by feasible value for the people.

“The early results are encouraging, ” Tinubu said.

He recalled his inauguration pledge to move Nigeria from uncertainty to renewed hope through structural reforms and economic discipline.

According to him, the administration’s policies are focused on fairness, transparency and creating an investment-friendly environment.

Tinubu said no nation could achieve lasting prosperity with a weak and fragmented revenue system or opaque taxation processes.

“That is why we embarked on bold tax and fiscal reforms to simplify the system and eliminate distortions,” he stated.

The president noted that early results of the reforms were encouraging, citing improved fiscal stability and rising investor confidence.

He commended the leadership of the revenue service led by Mr Zacch Adedeji for driving reforms and institutional efficiency.

Tinubu said the new headquarters reflected professionalism, transparency and the administration’s resolve to strengthen public institutions.

He urged the service to prioritise trust, fairness and accountability in revenue collection and service delivery.

“We must not only collect revenue; we must build trust and ensure fairness in our system,” he said.

The president emphasised that national renewal requires consistency, courage and collective commitment from all stakeholders.

He assured Nigerians that ongoing reforms would deliver sustainable development, prosperity and inclusive growth.

Tinubu declared the building open, stating that Nigeria’s future would be shaped by deliberate choices anchored on discipline and progress.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included; President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, governors and top government officials.(NAN)
