The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says 16 ships have arrived at the Lekki Deep Sea Port, Tin Can Island Port and Apapa Port in Lagos, awaiting berthing to discharge petroleum products, food items and other cargoes.
The authority disclosed this in its daily Shipping Position released on Wednesday in Lagos.
According to the NPA, the vessels are carrying petrol, aviation fuel, diesel, bulk wheat, bulk fertiliser, bulk urea, bulk sugar, general cargo and other consignments.
The NPA also said 28 additional vessels are expected to arrive at the three Lagos ports between July 22 and July 26.
It said the incoming ships are laden with bulk wheat, containerised cargo, fresh fish, petrol, trucks, fuel oil, diesel, crude oil, aviation fuel, general cargo and other imports.
Meanwhile, the authority noted that 21 ships are currently discharging cargo at the ports. The vessels are offloading containers, petrol, aviation fuel, crude oil, bulk fertiliser, bulk gypsum, gas, diesel, bulk wheat, bulk sugar, bulk urea, fresh fish, general cargo and base oil.
The latest shipping position also indicates that, despite increased domestic refining capacity following the commencement of production at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Nigeria continues to import significant volumes of refined petroleum products. Several of the vessels currently at the ports or expected to arrive in the coming days are laden with premium motor spirit (petrol), automotive gas oil (diesel), aviation fuel and fuel oil, underscoring the country’s continued reliance on imported fuels to meet domestic demand while local refining capacity continues to ramp up.
Overall, the shipping traffic reflects sustained cargo throughput at Nigeria’s busiest seaports, with petroleum products, food commodities and containerised cargo accounting for a significant share of vessel movements.
